What color is your host?
July 26, 2005 – 5:07 pmNow it is time for a shameless plug for my hosting provider. This and other web sites of mine are hosted by BlueHost. I have been with them for over a year and a half and I do not have any complaints. On top of having a huge amount of storage space and a high monthly bandwidth allowance I have shell access to my account and have many tools and options at my disposal. They only cost 6.95 per month. If you are looking for a high-quality hosting provider with excellent customer service then check out BlueHost and tell them that I sent you.

My BH experience was not nearly as happy as yours.
I’ve just left BlueHost because of an outrageous and crippling problem with CPU quota errors which the company either couldn’t or wouldn’t fix.
I’d say if you have a simple installation then perhaps BlueHost might work OK for you. But if you use mod_rewrite or .htaccess their technicians know little about it (& I use it a lot in my installation). Also, as I said above if something really weird happens on their servers they may not be able to fix it or even tell you what’s wrong.
My site was once shut down by BH because they claim I used up all my bandwidth for the month (in less than a second!). But actually there’d been a spike caused by the server which was atrributed to my site. I thought the whole incident was passing strange.
A friend offered to host my site on his virtual server & I’ve had no CPU errors at all–telling me the errors were caused by BH’s servers or by another user on my BH server.

I am sorry that you had trouble with your account at BH. At this point I have not had troubles with mod_rewrite or .htaccess on my account. I use them on both this blog and on the photo gallery associated with this site. I did have some troubles with the CPU quota thing for a bit while adding a large number of photos at once to the photo gallery. The BH staff was able to resolve the issue for me in short order though. I agree that your bandwidth incident does sound strange. Good luck with your other hosting choice. For my part I am still happy with BlueHost.
